Welcome - A.J. Labriola

Bishop Guilfoyle Academy Names New Director of Athletics Programs

Bishop Guilfoyle Academy (BG) is pleased to announce the hiring of Anthony “A.J.” Labriola, as the school’s first Preschool through Grade 12 Director of Athletics, effective January 20, 2026. This is a new position at BG that aims to create an enhanced, aligned, and integrated Preschool through Grade 12 athletics and wellness program.

Labriola, a 2018 graduate of BG and a 2022 graduate of Saint Francis University, will work with stakeholders to develop and deliver a quality athletics and wellness experience for students of all age levels.

“A.J. epitomizes Bishop Guilfoyle’s ethical code of goodness, discipline, and knowledge” said Dr. Robert Gildea, Chief Education Officer at BG. “I am confident, with his experience and vision, that he will continue to advance Bishop Guilfoyle athletics and further develop an innovative Preschool through Grade 12 wellness program to benefit all students.”

“I am excited to welcome A.J. as the leader of our athletics and wellness program,” expressed Mr. Michael Cacciotti, BG Junior and Senior High Principal. “As an alumnus, A.J. brings an understanding of our traditions and has a strong vision for our growth for our aligned Preschool through Grade 12 school system. Our entire student body and school community will benefit from A.J.’s presence and leadership.”

While a student-athlete at Saint Francis University, Labriola was a member of the men’s basketball team and earned his Bachelor of Arts in history with a concentration in secondary education, social studies and minor in religious studies, graduating with honors. He is currently working on his master’s degree in strategic leadership at Saint Francis University.

Labriola taught and coached for two years in the Spring Cove School District before assuming his current role at Saint Francis University as Associate Athletic Director for Student Athlete Leadership and Development. A.J. is the grandson of legendary Altoona area coach and teacher Tony Labriola.

In addition to ensuring seamless day-to-day processes and communications between school administration, coaches, and all who are involved with BG athletics, Labriola will help develop programs to help all students understand the importance of exercise and athletics participation, and the role it plays in overall health and wellness.

BG is grateful to current BG Athletic Director Joe Landolfi for his leadership and service. Landolfi will remain a part of the Athletic Department in an advisory role.

Every year a significant percentage of graduates go on to play sports at higher levels.

One of the most common comments we hear from college coaches about BG recruits is the quality of them as people.

Their personal discipline, respect, and teamwork they see truly distinguishes BG grads and makes the school highly regarded.
