Required Minimum Distributions

Donate Part of Your RMD

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)

When you reach the age at which you must begin taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) from a traditional IRA or 401(k), those distributions are generally subject to ordinary income tax. However, there is a tax-efficient way to use all or part of your RMD to support BG.

Before taking your RMD for the year, you may direct your broker to donate a portion—or all—of the distribution directly to BG. By doing so, you can avoid paying income tax on the donated amount, potentially remain in a lower tax bracket, and make a larger gift to the school.

Instead of taking the distribution, paying taxes, and then making a charitable contribution, consider directing your RMD to BG in advance. The donated amount can count toward your RMD requirement while offering meaningful tax savings.

How to Make an RMD Gift

  • Contact your broker to request a direct transfer from your IRA or retirement account to BG.

  • Reach out to the Advancement Office at advancement@bguilfoyle.org obtain BG’s brokerage and gift instructions.

  • Your broker will send the donation directly to BG’s brokerage account.

As always, we encourage you to consult your tax or financial advisor to determine whether this option is right for you.
